In the heart of Memphis, a remarkable young woman named Alexis found solace, support, and a new purpose in life through her involvement with Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM). Born and raised in Memphis, Alexis’s journey from a youth participant at MAM to becoming a coach is an inspiring testament to the transformative power of mentorship and community engagement.

Alexis first heard about MAM during her sophomore year of high school; however, her busy schedule as a member of a competitive dance team limited her ability to join initially. It wasn’t until her senior year, after the devastating loss of her sister, that Alexis sought refuge and support at MAM. Kenyatta, a staff member, reached out to her and became a guiding light during her time of grief. Alexis found comfort and a sense of escape from her reality through the caring coaches and programs offered at MAM.

Although Alexis didn’t participate in sports at MAM, she found herself immersed in weekly bible studies. This engagement allowed her to seek answers to life’s challenging questions, providing a foundation for her faith and helping her cope with her loss. Through MAM’s supportive environment, Alexis gained valuable life lessons, discovering that God places people and obstacles in our path to guide and teach us. She also learned that the journey itself holds the true treasure and that overcoming obstacles leads to personal growth and joy.

MAM had a profound impact on Alexis’s life, primarily due to her mentor, Kenyatta. Kenyatta’s support and wisdom transformed Alexis’s outlook, providing her with the encouragement and guidance she needed. Alexis’s relationship with her has evolved over the years. From being a guiding figure during Alexis’s youth to becoming a source of inspiration and admiration as Alexis transitions into young adulthood, their bond has grown stronger. Alexis looks up to Kenyatta’s dedication and commitment to helping others, and she aspires to follow in her footsteps, making a positive impact on the lives of those she mentors.

Inspired by the positive influence MAM had on her life, Alexis chose to return to MAM as a coach. She joined the team in the fall of 2022, driven by the desire to become a mentor for other girls who may need the same support she once received. Alexis’s young age allows her to connect deeply with the students, fostering an environment where they can trust and confide in her. She finds fulfillment in the conversations she has with the high school girls, knowing that she can be a source of comfort, guidance, and mentorship for them.

As a staff member, Alexis witnesses firsthand how MAM impacts youth daily. Through the emphasis on faith, MAM creates an environment where young people can grow and develop their relationship with God, providing them with a solid foundation for navigating life’s challenges. MAM instills values, discipline, and a sense of community, empowering youth to make positive choices and strive for a better future.

Working at MAM has had a profound impact on Alexis’s life. It has allowed her to give back to the organization that played a pivotal role in her personal growth and healing. By sharing her own experiences and providing support to the youth at MAM, Alexis finds fulfillment and a sense of purpose. Her work at MAM not only transforms the lives of the students she mentors but also continues to shape and inspire her own path.

Looking towards the future, Alexis has ambitious goals. She is currently pursuing a degree in economics and entrepreneurship, with plans to graduate this spring. Beyond that, she envisions herself on a career path that allows her to make a difference. She dreams of owning multiple businesses and, notably, an apartment complex for the homeless. Her goal is to provide a safe space and opportunities for those in need, creating a chain reaction of positive change in the lives of others.

Alexis’s journey from a youth participant at MAM to becoming a coach and mentor is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship, community, and resilience. Through the support and guidance she received at MAM, she was able to overcome challenges, find her purpose, and develop into a compassionate and dedicated mentor herself. MAM’s impact on Alexis’s life goes beyond her own growth—it extends to the students she mentors and the community as a whole. Alexis’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the lasting and positive influence that organizations like MAM can have on the lives of young people, creating a ripple effect of hope, empowerment, and change.Join us in celebrating the 25th anniversary of Memphis Athletic Ministries by becoming a monthly donor, or a MAM MVP. For just $25 a month, you can help us continue to provide a safe and nurturing environment for youth to experience Gospel-centered sports and afterschool programming.
