As Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM) marks its 25th anniversary, it’s a time not just for celebration but also reflection on the impactful stories that have shaped the organization. Among the many dedicated individuals and partners, Pastor Will Jones of Germantown Presbyterian Church stands out as a beacon of unwavering support, contributing not only financially but also through the active involvement of the congregation in MAM’s mission.Pastor Will’s journey with MAM began over a decade ago when the church established a partnership with the organization. While Germantown Presbyterian contributed financially, It wasn’t just about writing checks; the congregation dove into the heart of MAM’s work by volunteering their time and efforts. Pastor Will, inspired by the commitment of church members already engaged with MAM, embarked on a tour of MAM Olivet and witnessed firsthand the impact the organization was making in the lives of young individuals.

In an interview, Pastor Will shared his motivation for joining MAM’s cause, highlighting the dedication of individuals like Lisa Patterson, who was making a difference in the lives of children through education and mentorship. Witnessing the genuine care and impact on the children stirred a deep desire within him to be part of this incredible work.

Over the years, Pastor Will has actively participated as a reading assistant. In this role, he would meet with a student, aging from second to fourth grade, and review sight words, read aloud to one another, and provide homework support. His involvement extended beyond academics, providing a listening ear and emotional support during challenging times in the children’s lives. He recalls a specific occasion when he and his student did not spend a minute on academic time, but instead talked through the recent death of a family member of the child. Although at times tough, the joy he experiences in building relationships with the youth is unmistakable, creating a sense of connection that goes beyond the classroom. When asked about his perspective on volunteering, Pastor Will emphasized the profound influence mentors had on his own life. He recognized the power of being present. For him, he’s not expecting to make a lifelong impression but desires to be a positive influence during a crucial period in a child’s life.

Looking ahead, Pastor Will envisions a community united in supporting MAM, not just financially but with a continuous stream of volunteers from churches across Memphis. He dreams of a future where the impact of organizations like MAM is evident in increased education levels and literacy rates and a decline in youth delinquency and violence.

Pastor Will is particularly interested in expanding his impact to the mentoring program at MAM and is excited for a chance to work with older children. Recognizing the pivotal nature of the teenage years, he believes that a network of support can significantly influence a student’s future.
