This spring break, Memphis Athletic Ministries (MAM) opened its doors to over 100 elementary and middle school students at the MAM Grizzlies Center and MAM Olivet for a week of career exploration, hands-on learning, and community engagement. Over four days, our youth participated in engaging activities, explored potential career paths, and interacted with professionals who shared their journeys and experiences.
Career Exploration Comes to Life
Our elementary students embarked on a fun and interactive journey through career-themed games, hands-on challenges, and discussions designed to spark curiosity about the future. The younger campers kicked off with Career Bingo and a Dream Job Collage, encouraging them to reflect on their passions and interests. Through career charades, mock interviews, and role-playing exercises, they stepped into the shoes of different professionals, learning firsthand about various industries.
The excitement continued with skill-based career stations, where students experimented with bridge-building as engineers, sketched career-related artwork, and even practiced leadership and teaching skills. Whether designing their own sneakers, building structures, or presenting new business ideas, the activities reinforced creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving—key skills for any future career.
Hands-On Learning for Middle Schoolers
For our middle school students, the camp focused on deeper career exploration and critical thinking. They began by identifying their skills and interests through surveys and vision board activities, helping them connect their passions to potential careers. Through research projects, students became “career detectives,” investigating job responsibilities, required education, and industry trends.
Interactive stations brought career pathways to life, from engineering and healthcare to business and digital media. Whether designing logos, pitching business ideas, diagnosing “patients,” or constructing sturdy bridges, students engaged in real-world problem-solving. A Day in the Life simulation also challenged them to navigate workplace scenarios, strengthening their decision-making and communication skills.
Special Guests & Community Involvement
One of the highlights of the week was the track and field clinic at the MAM Grizzlies Center, led by 20 student-athletes and coaches from Texas’ LeTourneau University. Their mentorship and encouragement motivated our students to embrace discipline, perseverance, and teamwork—qualities that translate into both sports and career success.
At MAM Olivet, students had the opportunity to go on afternoon field trips, further broadening their horizons. Additionally, a special guest, Mr. Fortman from the Memphis Fire Department, shared his inspiring journey into firefighting. His story of hard work and dedication resonated with our students, emphasizing that success is built on passion and perseverance.
Looking Ahead
MAM’s Spring Break Camp was more than just a break from school—it was a launchpad for dreams. By equipping students with knowledge, hands-on experiences, and inspiring role models, we aim to empower them to explore their potential and pursue bright futures.
