Kiya is a senior at Middle College High School and has big plans for her future. She is a College Prep Scholar through QuestBridge, a national nonprofit that connects exceptional low-income youth with leading colleges and scholarship opportunities.

“I really want to go to Vanderbilt or Wash U. After that, I want to go to medical school at Meharry, as it is one of three black medical schools in the country, and become a trauma surgeon,” says Kiya.

Kiya started volunteering at MAM three years ago. She was chosen to be a part of AMP, MAM’s high school mentoring program. Through AMP, she says she has learned life skills that are helping her with her future.

“I know how to fill out the FAFSA form and I have a resume,” she said. “At school, my Spanish teacher told us to put together a resume, and I already had one. My teacher was very impressed.”

Kiya’s favorite Bible verse is Luke 1:45: Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

“When I was volunteering at the MAM Magnolia Center, Coach Robert Brumsey talked about the Lord every day. He pushed me to the point that I realized I needed a deeper relationship with Jesus,” she said. “I am blessed to be in positions that I never thought I would be in. Jesus gave me the chance to be a QuestBridge Scholar, and I will go to either Paraguay or Uruguay as a youth ambassador next summer.”
