Memphis Athletic Ministries Makes Difference in Lives of Mid-South Teens

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – All week, Local Memphis has been sharing with you how Memphis Athletic Ministries has been making a difference in the lives of children and teens in our area.

In addition to mentoring, discipleship and fellowship, Memphis Athletic Ministries is helping many build skills and become leaders— who serve our community.

Our team found out how.

On one of the hottest and humid days, volunteers are doing their part to get the job done.

The loads are heavy.

The work is hard.

The hours are long.

Cardarrius Jones is part of the group tearing away layers of shingles to set up anchors, hammering away, to replace a roof with the assistance of professionals such as Planet Roof.

“Honestly, I just really love to serve,” Jones said. “It’s a great opportunity to give back to my community anyway that I can.”

It’s one of the community service projects put on by volunteers with Service Over Self also known as SOS– which provides critical home repair in under-resourced areas of Memphis.

“Our hope is that not only are we repairing homes in this community, but also providing opportunities for youth to grow into servant leaders who serve and bless their communities for years to come.” Philip Walkley, SOS Executive Director.

SOS partners with organizations that work with youth like Memphis Athletic Ministries which helps teens build skills and understand the importance of giving back to their communities.

“I’ve been coming to MAM since 3rd grade,” said Jones. “Almost like a second home to me.”
