Volunteer’s Name: Kori Johnson

Daytime occupation: I just graduated from high school and I am heading to Kids Across America Summer Camp to work as a babysitter

Volunteer Position and MAM Location: I volunteered with homework help at the Leawood Location.

Why did you decide to start Volunteering with MAM? I decided to start volunteering with MAM because I absolutely love children and sports- literally 2 of my favorite things! I have great compassion for children who just want/need attention and love so MAM seemed like a great fit!

How long have you been volunteering with MAM? I have only been formally volunteering with MAM for a year but have had experience with the summer program in the past!

Do you have a favorite memory from volunteering? My favorite memory from MAM was when the girls and I had our own little talent show in one of the rooms. The kids are so talented and deserve to be showcased for their abilities!

Do you have any advice for someone who might want to start volunteering? My advice for a prospective volunteer would just be to be passionate about what you’re doing. It’s not always easy because you’re dealing with children that are most times about half of your own age and they don’t have the best attention span. However, the difference between a good experience and bad experience is to just love them anyway. At MAM you have ample opportunities to show the love and grace of Christ, so do it!! Also, don’t be afraid to show them that it’s okay to not do what social media and culture labels as “fun.” I have found that some kids like to go along with the bandwagon with what kids at school are doing, but I was able to be an example of choosing the Lord over being cool. I believe that this model will take them further in life than simply trying to get them to like you. Kids are kids; they are going to like you anyway so allow them to like you for the love and dedication to Christ that you display through your words and actions. Romans 1:16 all the way!
